Maths
We follow the Power Maths scheme throughout the school. We will be working on different units throughout the year and recapping as we go so that we can remember our knowledge for when we next need it. Due to the few years we have had, we will be spending a little longer on units and recapping our EYFS learning (so units may take us a little longer than the below plan states.)
Some activities you can do at home to practice your Maths:
- How many places can you find to count in steps of 2, 5 or 10. You could use the garden paths, or the stairs, or the swing at the park.
- Find some toys, can you count them? Can you sort them? How many different ways can you sort them?
- Find some objects at home. Can you count how many you have? Can you put them in 2s, 5s or 10s and count them?
- Numbers are everywhere! Can you find numbers in the environment?
- Can you help someone at home cook something? Can you help weigh out the ingredients?
- What shapes can you find around your home?
- Have a look around your home for different groups of objects. Maybe some apples and bananas in your fruit bowl. Can you write the number sentence to add them up? Or what number would they make if you made them into a number using your tens and ones.
- Make a pattern with things around the house.
- Play shops using some real coins.
- Make a game of snap or fishing to see if you can match numbers and pictorial representations, your number bonds, shapes and names, money and amounts and anything else you can think of!
Phonics
We follow the Monster Phonics scheme and during the year we will cover the sounds below:
We recap these during the year as we add to our knowledge. We use the Monster Phonics reading books to support our phonics learning (please see below for more info on this).
Some activities you can do at home with your phonic flashcards (the ones we send home each week) to practice your sounds:
- How many places can you find to write your sounds/spellings? You might find some shaving foam, sand, steam, chalk.
- Make pictures of your phonic/spelling words. Get someone to hide them around the house and you have 5minutes to find them and write the word.
- How many different ways can you find to write your sounds? Paint, shaving foam, sand…
- What items can you see outside around you with that sound in?
- Make a game of snap to remember your spellings. You could even make one of them a picture and one the word.
- Write some labels for things around your house - think about those sounds.

Pure Speech Sounds
Monster Phonics have created this video to model how each phoneme is pronounced. It is really important that when segmenting aloud to children these pure speech sounds are being used as it will aid spellings.

Reading
We expect children to read at least 3 times a week (even if it is to an older sibling or the dog!), we will change books in school every Friday.
We send home 4 reading books a week:
2x phonic books - These books will include atleast 1 Monster Phonic book. One book will be a familiar read which has been matched to the Monster Phonics scheme and their ability. This book will be a group reading book before being sent home on the Friday, this means it will be familiar and they will have read it atleast 2 or 3 times that week. Another will be a book that includes graphemes they are confident with and therefore should be able to sound and blend easily. These books will help to build the confidence of children and make them think "ooh I can read this so I must be a really good reader!"
1x challenge book - This is a book which will not include words only using their phonetic knowledge, but also some sounds which they may not yet have covered. This is a book to challenge their reading and share with an adult who can be there to help when it becomes challenging.
1x interest book - This is a book chosen from the class reading corner for an adult to share with them. This book is likely to be too tricky for the child to read it all and is a lovely opportunity for the child to listen and learn expression and voice control from you as an adult.
Children will be read to throughout the week so please make sure they have their reading folder in school every day with their reading book in, we will use the reading folders to put letters etc in to make sure they come home.
Some activities you can do at home with your phonic flashcards (the ones we send home each week) to practice your sounds:
- Where is the most adventurous place you can read a book?
- Build a castle, fairy house or den in your garden or somewhere in your house - what adventures might you go on? Who might join you?
- Find 2 different books and read them together with someone at home. Which one do you like best? Who was your favourite characters? Were there any similarities or differences?
Spellings
These will be tested the following Friday and will fit in with our Monster Phonics scheme. Each child has their own work booklet. We will add the date onto each booklet as and when we are testing them. We will add on additional words personalised to that child if we recognise there is a certain word they should know but are finding a little tricky. Please ensure it is kept in their reading folders so we can access it. These are special booklets so please look after them, we will have to ask for a small donation to replace any lost ones.
