Maths

We use PowerMaths for our maths learning at Benenden Primary. This scheme builds on previous learning as well as introducing new mathematical concepts each year.  Here is our yearly overview with the units that will be covered as well as the learning outcomes.

year 2 overview.pdf

Learning these new concepts takes lots of time and practise, so to support your child at home you can: play times table games with your child (X2, X5 and X10); talk about the time using language like 'quarter to' and showing your child the clock hands and their position; ask your child to help weigh and measure things around the house; find shapes when out and about and talk about their properties (how many sides/ faces/ vertices).

There are links on Google Classroom under 'useful links' for some great maths games.

If you need a reminder of Numbot's logins then please email.

Reading

Reading books should be returned (in book folders please!) on a Thursday so we can replenish them and send home some lovely new books for your child to read at home each Friday. Your child will bring home 4 reading books:

-2 phonics books.

-A challenge book. These books will have familar words and sounds but also some that are trickier or haven't been covered yet.

-An interest book. These books are from our book corner in the classroom by your child and are lovely to share with an adult. These books will be most likely quite challenging and therefore we would expect these books to be read to the child. This will allow them to hear and learn voice expression and internation.

We expect children to read 3 times each week. Any reading is fantastic and will hugely benefit your child across the curriculum, so whether it is reading a menu, cereal packet, TV subtitles or a book then encouraging, supporting and nurturing that reading is an amazing thing!

We also share books daily in the classroom and your child will read (independently/guided reading) each week so please bring reading folders with reading records each day.

To further your child's reading even more, you can ask them questions about their understanding of the story to strengthen their comprehension. Some example questions:

-What do you think is going to happen next?

- How do you think this character is feeling? Why do you think that?

-I wonder what *this word* means, do you have any ideas?

Phonics/ Spellings

We use Monster Phonics to teach phonics. In year 2 we learn new sounds as well as suffixes, homophones and spelling rules. We also recap previous sounds the strengthen our knowledge. There are some great phonics links on Google Classroom under 'Useful links'.

Our weekly phonics can be found on our intended learning. This links to our reading books that are sent home. In addition to this, we have spellings on Friday, practising the previous week's phonics sounds. These are dated in the Monster Phonics spelling booklets so please return with reading folders on a Thursday (there is a small fee to replace any lost spelling booklets). The sounds that we will be practising will also be highlighted on our 'This Weeks Learning' page.

Term 1 spellings will be working through the first 100 High Frequency Words.
