Science Baking Cookies Y1&Y2 (T1)
A lot of cooking involves chemistry and is essentially a series of chemical reactions. Knowing about this kitchen chemistry can help you to understand much more about what’s happening – and why your recipes sometimes go wrong!
Cooking and chemical changes: new substances are made, the process is irreversible and an energy change occurs. For example, bread turns brown as it is toasted. Sugars in the bread break down to form carbon. This change needs heat energy from the toaster, and it cannot be reversed.
Is there a better type of experiment? An investigation to prove that baking is just science! There are many rules about baking cookies. This is an opportunity to find out, while conducting a science investigation. For the experiment, we made one simple change to each of the batches of cookies - we removed one ingredient.
