Evacuee Experience at the Kent and East Sussex Railway

On Monday, Swallow Class travelled back in time to 1940's London where they were joined by lots of evacuee children, waiting to escape the Blitz bombing by travelling to the countryside by train. We were greeted by military police checking our national identity cards and tickets before waving goodbye and heading for Llwynfedw in Wales (Bodiam). On the train, we spoke to real life evacuees about their experiences before being greeted by our host families at the other end.

When we arrived back to school, we used our knowledge of the 'dig for victory' campaign to create wartime turnovers, parsnip pudding and tried a variety of tinned 'goodies' such as spam, corned beef and evaporated milk.
