Literacy, language and communication.
These next two weeks will find our Monster Phonics friends sharing The Frog Prince fairytale. We will use this as a stimulus for writing our own fairytales and drawing storymaps to help us talk about what happens next. The sounds we are learning this week are 'ure' 'ear' and 'oi' . The focus now is to support and encourage the children to write their own independent sentences by 'sounding out' i.e. hearing the sounds that they need to write and having a go at doing their own 'thinking writing'. We have tried writing spells, making up our own stories and labelling models with our thinking writing, oh yes! We will be changing reading books once a week as in Term 2 (after they have been quarantined) so book folders back by Wednesday please and new books will come home on Friday.
Understanding of the world
We will be looking at non fiction books this week to find out a little bit more about life in medieval times and compare it with now; discussing what came before electricity and modern transport etc. The facts we have learned about castles and castle life will be added to the online castle book in production. If you have any photos of visits to castles, we can upload them via Tapestry or email if you prefer. Assembly this week by Mrs Brook was about neurodiversity in time for Neurodiversity week and we had an excellent circle time about what makes us special and unique. We have been chatting about things which we love to do as a family, family customs and belonging.
Our fabulous Star of the Week this week is Luke, who wrote an amazing independent sentence in his news book before I had time to even had time to look...In circle time we will continue talking about what makes us special and unique. We are working on 'Our happy minds' , learning about what helps us to keep positive and help each other. Barnowls' mantra is 'We're strong and we're tough, we can do lots of stuff..' and this helps us to try new things and do our best...
Expressive arts and design
Thank you for all the good quality junk modelling materials flooding in, we have had some awesome inventions this week, my favourite have been the stylish handbags that the girls are turning out, more junk please! We have nearly finished our portraits and are looking foward to adding the finishing touches with golden crowns, gems and jewels and all things shiny and precious. We will be using them to support our thinking writing this week, 'If I was king/queen, lord or lady for a day, what would I do?'
PE will be Wednesday this week so do come dressed in PE kit with trackybots/leggings and trainers. We will be exploring a theme of travelling in gymnastics this term, revisiting the different rolls, jumps, stretches and slides along the apparatus. We will be doing our mile run every day so if you would like your Barn Owl to run in trainers they can be left in school. Do make sure they are named though please, ditto wellingtons and school shoes to help with independent changing.
Power Maths continues to reinforce 6,7 and 8. We shall look at counting out totals, number pairs for each number and counting beyond 10 and back again. We are finding out about the 'part/whole' model, learning how to share a number into two parts to find pairs and totals. Maths topic is money and we shall set up a 'snack bar' in role play to investigate coins and totals to 10. We have trained up our shop keepers this way and they are keeping an eye on the pennies...
